Fun Facts about Mt. Juliet
Mount Juliet (or Mt. Juliet), Tennessee is found straddling both U.S. Route 70 and Interstate 40 about 20 miles east of Nashville. It's located in the west of Wilson County and isn’t far from Lebanon to the east.
The city limits of Mt. Juliet form an unusual pattern, a combination of a large letter L with a t-shaped extension reaching out from the west-side. Man-made reservoirs Percy Priest Lake and Old Hickory Lake border the town on the south and north sides respectively, lending it the nickname "City Between The Lakes."
The town picks up its name from a manor house in County Kilkenny, Ireland, the Mount Juliet Estate. It was first settled in 1835 but wouldn't be incorporated for another 137 years in 1972. The city has seen remarkable growth as a Nashville bedroom community, rising from 23,671 residents in 2010 to an estimated 2018 population of 35,725.
There are three structures on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Warner Price Mumford Smith House, the John Cloyd House, and the Chandler Stone Wall. Cook's United Methodist Church was built in the mid-1800's.
There are six outdoor parks, including the “Bark Park,” a fenced-in dog park with a pavilion, sand volleyball court, and playground. The farmer’s market is found at Charlie Daniels Park with its Planet Playground and Ava’s Splash Pad. This large park includes an amphitheater, basketball court, tennis court, sand volleyball, skate park, walking path, and many more amenities.
During the early morning hours of March 3, 2020, the city suffered a tragic disaster when an EF-4 tornado with 175 mph winds swept through the area. 25 people died during the event and hundreds of buildings in Nashville, Cookeville, and Mt. Juliet, were destroyed. Among the damaged structures were Mount Juliet Christian Academy, Stoner Creek Elementary, and West Wilson Middle School.
